My momma taught me, “It’s a privilege, not a right”

I’m talking about the privilege to drive a car. I drive way more than I want to and a lot of it is on the highway and I cannot believe that stupidity that is going on with some of the other drivers. I keep wondering if I’m the only one who sees this nonsense and where are the cops?

Oh, that’s right. The government took that money away.

So, here’s what my momma taught me.

1. The on-ramp is for getting up to speed.

That’s right, folks. The on-ramp is where you push the pedal that sends gas to the engine so your car will go faster. We should not be a mile down the road before you decide to do the speed limit.

2. You paid for the turn signals. They were not optional equipment on your car. Use them.

Last time I checked, I was not a mind reader. I have now decided that if anyone starts handing out super powers, I’m picking that one. You are required to tell other drivers what you are going to do. The cops will give you a ticket for failure to use a signal. For that matter, they will give you a ticket for using the wrong turn signal.

3. The far right lane is for slower traffic, the middle is for slightly above the speed limit or people who have many miles to travel, and the far left lane is for passing.

When did it become ok for anyone to pass in any lane they want? It freaks me out when I’m minding my own business, doing 3 to 5 miles over the speed limit and you come barreling down the highway on my right side doing 15 to 20 over the speed limit. Are you trying to cause an accident? And while we’re on the subject…

4. Obey all posted speed limits.

No one is going to give you a ticket for doing the speed limit, but they sure as heck will for speeding. Do you know what that does to your insurance rates? Not pretty, people. I’ve seen it. You may think your insurance company won’t find out but they do. Every time your policy renews they pull your MVR report to check your driving record. Ever wonder why it went up $300? That’s why.

Wherever you need to go is not that important. It’s much more important that you get there ALIVE. Slow down. You don’t have to rush everywhere.

And please don’t ride my bumper just because you think I should be going faster. You are not the one who will get the ticket if the cops pull ME over. I’ve never had a speeding ticket and I sure don’t want one, thank you very much.

5. Driving a car is a privilege, not a right.

No one is required to give you a license. Yes, you took the test. Yes, you passed the test. Yes, you paid your fees. FOR THE PRIVILEGE!!! There is no law in the constitution that says every American MUST have a driver’s license. You do not own the road. Most people probably don’t even own the cars on the road.

Well, those are my pet peeves when I’m driving. What are yours?

One more accomplishment

For the last 2 and 1/2 weeks, I’ve been waiting for word from the state about my insurance license application. Yesterday I finally got the confirmation email. They have accepted my application and issued me a license to sell insurance in Ohio! I’m so proud of myself. I can’t really believe I’m on this journey right now. I never thought I would be the type of person who would be happy in an office. I’m more the run-free-through-the-woods type. I do have moments where I can’t stare at the same four walls anymore but it helps that we have windows and I can always take a break, even if just for a couple of minutes.

Today is also the first day of class for me. I’ve got two classes online this quarter. Intro to Law and Micro Econ. Yeah, I know, it’s gonna be tough but I’ve got to do this for my degree. I’ve also got Stats this quarter but that one I’m taking on campus. I do better with math classes in person. It loses something in the translation online.

The next thing I need to work on is either finding a new home for my daughter and I that allows dogs or convince her we don’t really need a dog lol. I have a feeling before long, I’m going to be packing lol. I don’t want to move but I’ve got to admit, I would love a dog, too. We have two cats already that I’m sure would NOT like a dog. We’ll see what happens. I’m not having much luck yet, but it may just not be the right time yet. The apartment I have now came at the perfect time last year so I hope another place will come along at the right time.

What are your goals and plans? Any recent accomplishments?

Take care friends
